prickly or not is always up to someone else to decide

There are always different ways to evaluate anything that happens. It seems that so often we all base those opinions on things that have happened in the past instead of what is happening in front of us. I get pissed when it happens to me and yet I do it all the time. How do you base your action on what is happening in the present instead of the past without getting walked all over. Wasn't that the problem with Nick Carraway in Gatsby? He wasn't passing judgments and so he got let down. Where is the balance between judgment and action?
